Moderator Arne O Holm from the High North Center for Business and Governance opened the seminar, and gave the floor to Scottish MEP Alyn Smith, who is committed to bringing Arctic issues higher on the European agenda, and kindly hosted this seminar in the parliament.
 
Frode Mellemvik, director of the High North Center for Business and Governance, gave an overview of their cooperation on education and research in the High North, with particular focus on Russia. He also welcomed the participants to the High North Dialogue conference taking place in Bodø, Norway, 17-19 March.
 
Iceland has named the Arctic as one of its main priorities, and ambassador of the Icelandic mission to the EU Bergdís Ellersdóttir welcomes EU interest and cooperation.
 
Lill Harriet Brusdal gave a business perspective on activities and challenges in the Arctic as experienced by Statoil. Statoil has been present in the Norwegian Arctic for decades, and deems it an attractive area for European businesses, provided some Arctic know-how.
 
Felix Tschudi of the Tschudi group is heavily involved in the Arctic shipping industry, and underlined the massive opportunities in the north that can benefit the EU economy.
 
Representing the Northern Dimension Partnership on Transport and Logistics, Oddgeir Danielsen emphasised the key role that infrastructure plays in economic growth in Northern Europe.
 
Finally, Dennis Malone of the University of the Highlands and Islands, presented tools for cooperating on and financing Arctic projects using EU programmes and strategies.
