nordland-bildeThe population of Nordland consists of 237.500 inhabitants spread over 45 municipalities. Nordland’s municipalities vary as regards population from Træna (474 inhabitants) and Vevelstad (557 inhabitants) to town municipalities such as Narvik (18.500) and Bodø (41.700), according to official statistics (SSB) in January 2002.

 

Nordland County Council (Nordland Fylkeskommune) is a politically led organisation with the County Council as the highest authority. The inhabitants of the county elect the members of the County Council in regional elections every fourth year. The county's most important tasks are the provision of secondary education, culture, dental health care, transport services and regional development. To perform these tasks Nordland County Council has a total of 3.500 employees, and plays a key role in management and development of the region.
